An incredibly RARE offering of this double weight issue in gold, with the only other appearance at auction located by this cataloger being an example that sold in 2016 (along with the silver piefort issue–far less difficult to obtain) for a hammer of $120,000 (plus buyer’s fee).
An interesting and captivating type, this was part of the movement enacted by UNESCO in 1979 to make that year the “international year of the child,” an act supporting UNICEF’s 20th anniversary for the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959. Attention was drawn to the issues faced by the world’s youth, with the hope of raising both awareness and funds to support those in need. Coins such as this piece were part of the global effort to combat issues like hunger, poverty, and a lack of education.
